A fridge is an essential appliance in any home. It keeps food fresh and cold, which means a fridge plays a major role in the way you live your life.

Most fridges can last for a decade or more, but this will greatly depend on how you use it. Is your fridge on its last leg? You’re not alone. Most refrigerators will die before they reach the 10-year mark and it can be a costly mistake to replace one when you could have just fixed it for an affordable price.

Just like many other appliances, fridges have to be taken care of properly to ensure they last as long as possible. From its location in your house to the kind of food you store constantly, all these will have an impact on the efficiency and longevity of your fridge.

Follow these 5 tips for fridge maintenance and you’ll enjoy your fridge for longer!

Tip #01: Proper fridge placement is important for energy efficiency.

Place your fridge on the coolest spot of floor and make sure there’s plenty of room around it, at least a foot or two from any wall to allow good air circulation. Keep it out of direct sunlight, avoid placing it near a heat source, and make sure there’s proper ventilation.

The most energy-efficient place to put your fridge is in a corner, because if it’s too close to the wall, it could be wasting energy.

Tip #02: Keep condenser coils clean

The best way to keep your condenser coils clean is with a vacuum cleaner brush attachment. The brushes are designed not to harm the fins, which results in less energy lost due to dirty coil surfaces. Doing this regularly will also avoid fridge corrosion build-up.  which will lead to problems like leaky seals and refrigerant leaks that can cause expensive repair costs.

Tip #03: Wipe down your fridge and shelves at least once a week

This will not only help to keep things tidy, but it can also reduce bacteria growth. Make sure you clean up any spillages as soon as possible; fridge spills are one of the most common sources of food poisoning!

Put away leftovers quickly after cooking them in order to prevent odours from building up in your fridge. Remember that hot foods generate strong smells too, so don’t store these for long periods inside an already warm fridge!

Tip #04: Close the door!

Did you know that it takes more effort to cool a refrigerator than it does to heat it up? If the door is left open, even for just an hour or so, temperatures inside can soar by 20 degrees.

Consider closing the refrigerator door to keep it from wasting energy. You will save as much money in a year by doing this one thing as you would if you saved all your other household appliances from being left on for an entire day.

Tip #05: Refrain from overcrowding the top of the fridge.

Although it seems like a good idea to fill up the space on top of your refrigerator, this is not recommended. The cool air will drop down and warm air will rise to replace it. This could lead to food spoilage or worse, mold growth.

It’s important to leave enough space so that cold air can circulate properly, and this will help keep your food fresh for longer.

The good news is that you don’t have to spend a fortune on a new fridge. With these 5 tips, your old one can last for years longer!
